These spiders reside in many parts of the southern United States as they prefer warmer climates. The caterpillars in Catocalinae are usually smooth-skinned and lack of hairs. The black widow spider has the most notorious reputation. Bees' mouthparts are modified to a hairy tongue, which is used for sucking up nectar from flowers. After grabbing the skin-wearing Leptodactylus specimens, the spiders examined them, and released them unharmed. Some adults survive by preparing a winter nest of silken webbing under loose bark within which they are insulated from the cold. Unfortunately, it is also the most poisonous by weight.
