The etymological origins of the word "baroque" are debatable. Prior to Baroque theatre, the backdrops and scene settings were simplistic and did not change. Owing to its importance, over time it came to be known as more than just an intermezzo and was performed as a stand-alone work. Both crews aimed to conquer a kingdom by overthrowing the current king. So no single term can accurately describe all of the art produced in these years.

Poussin was so influential that, up until the rise of modern art, his style (which is sharply linear) was widely considered the ideal model of French painting. There is still rhythmic energy and drive, but without the weightiness of Baroque music. His music served as an example for most every Russian composer that came after him. The themes of the librettos he used (though not the oratorios) deal mostly with relationships, power and politics, or are staged in the mythical, and not the spiritual realm. In 1401, the sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti (c. 1378-1455) won a major competition to design a new set of bronze doors for the Baptistery of the cathedral of Florence, beating out contemporaries such as the architect Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) and the young Donatello (c. 1386- 1466), who would later emerge as the master of early Renaissance sculpture.
